Improving Trail Accessibility and Site Beautification
TJTU "Catch & Release" Section of the Moormans River

In the spring of 08, Zachary Andrews completed his Eagle Scout project.

His goals were:

  1. to make the Thomas Jefferson Trout Unlimited (TJTU)  "Catch and Release" Section of Moormans River Nature Area more accessible for individuals with mobility impairments;
  2. to provide environmental beautification to the Moormans River Nature Area;
  3. to construct the John Kostanecki Memorial Trail. As stated by Zach, "this trail is to honor John who was great friend, participant and supporter of Therapeutic Adventures. I had the pleasure to know John.  He was one of my dad’s best friends."  He was always smiling and had a positive outlook about everything!  John was board member for Therapeutic Adventures—a great athlete—an avid adaptive angler, mono-skier, kayaker, wheelchair marathoner, and Paralympics sailor who excelled in all the outdoor activities.

Paths to Happiness is a very impressive project.  Zach raised $3120 to fund construction the trails and kiosks.  He recruited and provided the leadership to organize 32 volunteers who contributed 307.5 hours over several weekends.

According to James "Chubby" Damron, President of TJTU, "this project has provided a wonderful transformation to our 'Catch and Release' section of the Moormans River.  The improvements to the trails and our new educational and information kiosks will enable us to better serve adaptive anglers who participate in TJTU and Therapeutic Adventures fly fishing and conservation programs. We have received wonderful feedback from the fly fishing community as a whole."

Congratulations Zach on a job well done!
