A Moormans River Runs Through It – Disability Access Project.

On Wednesday, September 22, 2010, thousands of local individuals, students, and business professionals donated a day of service as they participated in hundreds of projects which were part of the annual Thomas Jefferson United Way – Lawrence E. Richardson – Day of Caring.

Therapeutic Adventures, Inc. (TA) and Thomas Jefferson Trout Unlimited (TJTU) hosted twenty-seven (27) caring professionals from local businesses and community organizations—SRA International, Volvo of Charlottesville, and The Senior Center. These committed volunteers helped to make a positive impact on the quality of the Moormans River Nature Area.

The “Catch and Release” section of the Moormans River is maintained by Thomas Jefferson Trout Unlimited with support from Therapeutic Adventures, Inc. A Moormans River Runs Through It – Disability Access Project was a natural progression to our existing “PATHS TO HAPPINESS” and John Kostanecki Memorial Trail.

TA & TJTU offer many unique adaptive educational programs, camps and therapeutic retreats which benefit persons with a variety of differing abilities and special needs. Because the Moormans River is used for important programs and projects – (ADAPTIVE ANGERS ON THE FLY, Spring Fly Fling – Serving Women Cancer Survivors, and Operation Freedom Outdoors – Serving Wounded Warriors and Disabled Veterans), we are always working to maintain and improve accessibility, as well as the environmental quality of this wonderful natural resource.

This crew of volunteers did a fantastic job! It is amazing how much work can be accomplished when a group of twenty-seven individuals work toward a common goal. With over two-hundred and six hours (206 hrs.) of volunteer labor donated, we are very pleased with the improvements made to the existing trails, the addition of new access trails and the construction of dams that were added to enhance trout habitat.

Thank you for supporting our efforts to provide important disability access and environmental beautification to the Moormans River!
