Mentoring
TA staff, volunteers and alumni support our mission. In doing so, we call on each of them to serve as mentors for new clients. Therapeutic Adventures mentors are roles models who must wear many different hats: coach, teacher, counselor, friend, guide, and partner.
The Therapeutic Adventures mentor/mentee relationship is a very unique partnership that promotes development of many important life skills and empowers the achievement of functional independence and self-reliance in adaptive outdoor activities.
Stewardship
At the heart of Therapeutic Adventures is a philosophy that sets us apart from other programs: – (1) service to others, and (2) service to the environments where adaptive outdoor adventures are offered and enjoyed. This is accomplished, in part, by an approach that emphasizes the development and nurturing of meaningful partnerships at all levels of the program.
Stewardship is the willingness to be accountable for the well being of the larger organization by operating in service, rather than in control, of those around us. Stated simply, stewardship is accountability without control or compliance.
Stewardship is concerned with creating a way of governing ourselves that creates a strong sense of ownership and responsibility for outcomes. It means giving control to the customers (volunteers/clients) and creating self-reliance on the part of all who are touched by the institution. (Block, 1996)
